Diego Forlan joined Manchester United with the hopes of becoming one of the mainstay strikers in the team. However with the never diminishing effectiveness of Ruud van Nistelrooij and the newly acquired Alan Smith from Leeds United has made it near impossible to become an established striker at a club which has nothing but the highest expectations, which Forlan was unable to contribute.
He was sold to Villareal for an estimated 2 million pounds.
His start at Villareal has been a smashing success, including having 9 goals halfway through the season, Forlan seemed to start a trend which he could never accomplish at Manchester United.
By the end of the season, Forlan tied with Arsenal's Thierry Henry for Golden Boot award with both having 25 goals in their respective leagues. A double celebration for the player as he also helped his team qualify for the Champions League.
